Task 7

TASK 7: ANNOTATED FRONT COVER

I have chosen Time as my annotated magazine cover. This is because they constantly have a diverse range of models, with meaningful and inspirational backstories. You can always learn from this current affairs magazine. I selected this issue as I strongly believe people of colour should feature in more magazines. This issue especially stood out to me as the model, Aisha, is an 18 year old woman who fled from abusive in-laws in Afghanistan, and had her nose and ears cut off as a result. Time magazine has given Aisha a platform, and with Twentyfour I wish to do the same. 

What this has inspired me to include in my magazine 

  • A range of diverse models 
  • Issues that are not talked about enough to young adults, such as advice and signs of abuse 
  • International issues
  • Raw, unfiltered news
  • A strong brand identity through text, fonts, logos and colours 
  • Models who have a backstory and relate to specific articles, e.g. a POC model relating to a culture based article

  TASK 1: INDUSTRY: Research Dennis Publishing UK Brief history of Dennis Publishing UK Dennis publishing was created by publisher and entrepreneur Felix Dennis in Fitzrovia, London. Dennis identified a gap in the publishing market, computers. From this, Dennis then launched and acquired a series of computer titles, such as Hi-Fi Choice, PC Pro, and Personal Computer World magazines. This resulted in Dennis Publishing becoming the United Kingdom's leading technology publisher. In 1995, Maxim was launched. This was a title that originated from the back of a beer mat, and soon became the world's biggest, bestselling men's lifestyle magazine and global brand.   TASK 3: CONVENTIONS Basic conventions Masthead – the masthead is the title block for the magazine, usually this is the most eye-catching convention on a page and has to be distinct Menu – the list of contents inside the paper By-line – name of the reporter  Caption – text underneath a image explaining it Headline - main statement, usually in the largest and boldest font, describing the main story, a banner headline spans the full width of the page Analysis of magazine covers The Week Analysis The first cover I have chosen to analyse is The Week Typically, The Week has a  humorous , caricature front cover.
